What is a DoS or DDoS?
DoS is an acronym for “Denial of Service”. It is an attack where the cyber criminal generates an enormous amount of requests targeted at the host server, so that it will generate an overload and take it offline, making it unable to serve new requests from real visitors.
A DoS is, in certain ways, an attack that is easy to block, since it is only a matter of blocking the IP address from which the bad traffic is being originated. Besides, one single IP will have limited damage potential.
But when it comes to a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service), despite its simillarity to a DoS, it is originated by hundreds, if not thousands, of different servers, which may have been infected and seized by hackers. This type of attack can bring catastrophic consequences, being very difficult to handle properly by conventional infrastructure.
In such cases, only specific Anti-DDoS and WAF systems can withstand the enormous amount of data transfer and block the attack effectively .
